Volunteer Bio:
I am participating in the Longest Game for CF for my son, Beckett, who has Cystic Fibrosis.
Beckett is now 2 and a half. He smiled from the day he was born, seemed perfect in every way, but didn’t grow. We couldn’t believe anything was wrong with him because he was so happy all the time, but at 5 months old when your baby doesn’t yet weigh 10 pounds and has chronic pneumonia, it is time to face the music. That’s when our doctor uttered to most dreadful words “It’s not quite the death sentence it used to be; but I wouldn’t wish CF on my worst enemy”.
Life has been a series of ups and down since. Beckett, now preparing for preschool, is potty trained, talking a mile a minute and full of joy, and he has managed to stay mostly healthy. We battle with his weight. His lungs are of constant concern. We feel like we live at Children’s Hospital, but still, we are blessed. Though Beckett can’t be at the ice rink during the game (CF patients can spread very nasty illnesses to each, other, so to keep him safe he will stay away) – he will surely be cheering from home. The loves hockey so much!
As for me, born in Winnipeg I can appreciate a great hockey game and can’t wait to see all 243 hours of it!. I look forward to being a big part of recruiting and coordinating the volunteers, and am ever so grateful for all the amazing people coming together to ensure that CF means Cure Found for Beckett!
